Vagin è un prodotto emiliano-romagnolo che sgorga in quel di Bomporto, in provincia di Modena. Il luogo dove viene creato è la Distilleria Gavioli, il mastro distillatore è Simone Candini. Abbiamo sviluppato insieme la ricetta, sperimentando ogni fase per corrispondenza durante il 2020. L’idea iniziale era quella di creare un Gin dal sapore tradizionale, quindi fedele al ginepro e senza troppi fronzoli, ma con un gusto particolare. Come botanica distintiva abbiamo scelto il Pepe Rosa, una bacca delicata, ma con il suo caratterino.

Sul nome Vagin corrono tante leggende, quale sarà quella vera? Chi giunge fin qui si merita la cruda ma sincera verità. Nella primavera del 2019 un’illuminazione folgorante ci colpisce; noi seguiamo l’intuizione iniziando a compilare le scartoffie per iniziare a produrre il nostro Vagin. Il nome però non è piaciuto molto tra gli uffici. Rimandati a giudizio, abbiamo atteso sei mesi per una brutta bocciatura. Ma senza perderci d’animo, presentammo un ricorso. Lo scritto, compilato dal nostro carissimo avvocato, contiene esempi di colleghi e colleghe illustri, come la Birra Minchia, la Passerina, il Pecorino, la grappa Bocchino e via dicendo. Dopo altri sei mesi, il responso arrivò: vittoria sul il ricorso! Occhio però: manca una marca da bollo. Contenti e frustrati, procediamo con l’acquisto e la collocazione del prezioso bollo e dopo tre mesi e tante belle parole, il nome Vagin brilla tra le carte della Camera di Commercio di Bologna.

Vagin is an Emilia-Romagna product that flows from Bomporto, in the province of Modena. The place where it is created is the Gavioli Distillery, the master distiller is Simone Candini. We developed the recipe together, experimenting with each phase by correspondence during 2020. The initial idea was to create a Gin with a traditional flavour, therefore faithful to the juniper and without too many frills, but with a particular taste. As a distinctive botanical we have chosen Pink Pepper, a delicate berry, but with its own character.

There are many legends surrounding the name Vagin, which one will be the true one? Whoever gets this far deserves the raw but sincere truth. In the spring of 2019 a dazzling light strikes us; we follow our intuition by starting to fill out the paperwork to start producing our Vagin. However, the name was not very popular among the offices. Sent back for trial, we waited six months for a bad rejection. But without losing heart, we filed an appeal. The writing, compiled by our dearest lawyer, contains examples of illustrious colleagues, such as Birra Minchia, Passerina, Pecorino, Bocchino grappa and so on. After another six months, the response arrived: victory on the appeal! But be careful: a revenue stamp is missing. Happy and frustrated, we proceed with the purchase and placement of the precious stamp and after three months and many beautiful words, the name Vagin shines among the papers of the Bologna Chamber of Commerce.

Con un nome così non poteva mancare nelle pagine del nostro blog! Scherzi a parte il Vagin è un gin completo con un bilanciamento delle botaniche che ci ha convinti, basta variare la tonica abbinata e passa da agrumeto a floreale, da dolce a amarognolo, ma sempre con un carattere ben distinto.

With a name like that it couldn’t be missing from the pages of our blog! Jokes aside, Vagin is a complete gin with a balance of botanicals that convinced us, just vary the combined tonic and it goes from citrus to floral, from sweet to bitter, but always with a very distinct character.

Quale acqua tonica usare? / wich tonic water?

Abbiamo provato questo gin con varie toniche, quella che ha bilanciato meglio le botaniche è la Fever Tree Indian in quanto riesce a far amalgamare bene le note agrumate dell’arancio e l’iris alle note amare della genziana e speziate del pepe rosa. Per chi piace il sapore rinfrescante di questo gin lo può abbinare anche alla Schweppes che dona un sapore più neutro al gin tonic.

We tried this gin with various tonics, the one that balanced the botanicals best is the Fever Tree Indian as it manages to mix well the citrus notes of orange and iris with the bitter notes of gentian and spicy notes of pink pepper. For those who like the refreshing flavor of this gin, you can also combine it with Schweppes which gives a more neutral flavor to the gin and tonic.

COSA CI PIACE E COSA NO / WHAT WE LIKE AND WHAT WE DON’T

Ci piace il profumo dato dalla parte speziata del pepe rosa seguita dalla nota agrumata dell’arancio e floreale dell’iris e del ginepro, mentre bevuto liscio al palato rimane subito la nota secca e amarognola della genziana che accompagna il gusto del ginepro che si lega con la nota agrumata della scorza d’arancia e il finale speziato del pepe rosa. Ci piace la semplicità di questo gin che si presta ad essere una base perfetta per molti cocktail, in particolar modo per un buon gin tonic.

Difetti davvero non ne troviamo.

We like the scent given by the spicy part of the pink pepper followed by the citrus note of the orange and the floral note of the iris and the juniper, while drunk straight on the palate the dry and bitter note of the gentian immediately remains which accompanies the taste of the juniper which binds with the citrus note of orange peel and the spicy finish of pink pepper. We like the simplicity of this gin which lends itself to being a perfect base for many cocktails, especially for a good gin and tonic.

We really can’t find any faults.
